WACO, Texas - Eighth-ranked Baylor scored a season-high 15 runs Tuesday night, including 10 in the first three innings, and rolled to a 15-4 win over Houston at Baylor Ballpark.
Freshman Mark McCormick (1-0) earned his first collegiate win, pitching six full innings and allowing three runs (two earned). Houston (7-10), meanwhile, lost to Baylor (15-5) for the second time this season; on Feb. 14, the Bears pounded the Cougars 14-4 at the Minute Maid Park College Classic.
Baylor scored once in the first, three times in the second and six times in the third to break the game open against Houston starter Gene Flores (0-1). The Bears added five more runs in the seventh as the Cougars paraded through seven pitchers on the night.
Eight different Bears each recorded two hits, though none recorded more than two. Chris Durbin drove in three runs and scored three times, knocking out a double and a home run in addition to two walks. The senior centerfielder leads the Big 12 in homers with seven and in runs with 35.
Other offensive stars included Trey Webb, who homered, drove in a career-best four runs and scored three times; David Murphy, who drove in three runs and extended his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games; and Ross Bennett, who upped his conference-leading average to .517 and pushed his career-best hitting streak to 10 games.
In picking up the win, McCormick went a career-long six innings and allowed just five hits, striking out two and walking three. His only trouble spot came in the fifth, when an error accounted for one run and a two-out single drove in the second and third runs.
Sean Walker, Andy Pape and Tyler Bullock each pitched one inning to close out the game. Walker and Pape each struck out one batter while pitching scoreless frames.
Bullock made his collegiate pitching debut after having started once at catcher and once at designated hitter for the Bears earlier this season. The freshman struck out two and allowed only one hit and an unearned run while pitching the final inning.
The Bears open conference play this weekend, hosting Texas Tech. Game times at Baylor Ballpark are set for 7 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
NOTES: Durbin recorded his 63rd career double, tying Marty Crawford for second on the Baylor charts with 63; Durbin needs only one more to move into a tie with Eric Nelson for the record... Durbin also hit his 30th career home run, moving into a tie for seventh place in the Baylor recordbook with Jeremy Dodson.
