WACO, Texas - Andreas Gjesteby, a three-time member of the Norwegian National team, signed a National Letter of Intent for 2012-13, Baylor head men's golf coach Greg Priest announced Friday.
Gjesteby (pronounced YEST-uh-bee) is the seventh European golfer to sign with Baylor in the last five seasons and the fourth from Norway. The Drammen, Norway, product joins the European pipeline that includes current golfers Lorenzo Scotto (Pordenone, Italy), Joakim Mikkelsen (Drammen, Norway), Niclas Mansson (Halmstad, Sweden), Mikkel Bjerch-Andresen (Baerum, Norway) and Filippo Zucchetti (Massino Visconti, Italy).
Gjesteby, who hails from the same hometown as Baylor senior Joakim Mikkelsen, won the 2011 Titleist Tour Order of Merit and the Norwegian National Championship, while also winning a pair of Titleist Tour events. He was a member of the team that won the 2011 Norwegian Junior Team Championship.
"Andreas is another team-oriented golfer, who has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in Europe," Priest said. "As a member of the Norwegian National Team, he continues our recent trend of recruiting high-quality European golfers and will help our team continue to compete at a high level." In 2010, he posted a second-place finish on the Titleist Tour at Stavanger GK and was a member of the second-place team at the Norwegian Junior Team Championships. He also finished sixth at the 2010 Canadian Junior Challenge.
In 2009, he won the Titleist Tour event at Arendal GK and followed it up with a second-place finish in the Titleist Tour Match Play at KragerÝ GK. That same year, Gjesteby won the 2009 Norwegian Golf Association Junior Fellowship.
After a successful fall season, the Baylor men's golf team begins its quest for a 15th consecutive NCAA postseason appearance when it opens the spring Feb. 13-14 at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational.
