• AcroTumb Drops Season Opener at APU

AZUSA, Calif. – Baylor Acrobatics & Tumbling held a slight lead after the second event, but Azusa Pacific rallied and took advantage of an 8.53-point advantage in the team routine to close out a 269.39-257.4 win over the Bears in both teams’ season openers on Saturday night at the Cougar Dome.

“It was a great experience," head coach LaPrise Harris-Williams said. "The girls were so excited for the opportunity to compete in their first meet. With all the controversy they went through last semester, it was good for everyone to get through the meet, see the format and finish without any injuries.”

Baylor began the season with a 38.5-38 win in Compulsories, but APU answered and took a 65.42-62.66 lead with a strong showing in the Acro event, and the Bears fell behind further after dropping the Pyramid event.

APU’s wins in the Acro and Pyramid events gave it a 93.92-90.16 lead at the break, but the Bears closed the gap by winning the first Basket Toss heat 9.4-8.75. Even with the Cougars taking the second Basket Toss 9.3-9.1, the Bears edged closer at 120.92-117.56 through four of six events.

Baylor won three of the six Tumbling heats, but the three heats won by APU were by larger margins and extended the Cougars’ lead to 174.12-170.66 heading into the final event – the team routine.

Azusa won the final event by more than 8.5 points, giving the Cougars a final score of 269.39 – nearly 12 points better than Baylor’s 257.4.

Baylor’s next meet is one month away, when the Bears travel to Oregon on March 4. After a tri-meet at Fairmont State on March 11, Baylor hosts its first home meet of the season when Maryland comes to the Ferrell Center on March 24.
