IRVING, Texas Ė Baylor senior Joakim Mikkelsen was named Big 12 Menís Golfer of the Month for April, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Mikkelsen earned his second Golfer of the Month selection, becoming the first Baylor menís golfer to earn multiple Golfer of the Month honors since Ryan Baca during the 2005-06 season. He was named the Big 12 Golfer of the Month for February after winning the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational to open spring competition.
Mikkelsen punctuated a string of top-20 finishes during the month of April by winning the 2012 Big 12 Championship with a 3-under 285 for the four-round event. The senior erased a seven-stroke deficit in the final round to win by two strokes, becoming just the second Baylor golfer to win the Big 12 title (Worth Williams, 2001). His finish at Whispering Pines in Trinity earned him Big 12 All-Tournament Team honors, the first by a Baylor golfer since Bill Allcorn in 2009.
The Drammen, Norway, native opened the month of April with a 14th-place finish (2-under 214) at The Woodlands All-American Intercollegiate and then tied for 20th (12-over 228) at The Aggie Invitational.
The three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 performer turned in a 72.70 stroke average in April. He now has six top-five finishes this season, matching his career total for the first three seasons. He ranked third in school history with 12 top-5 and 19 top-10 finishes.
Mikkelsen is only the fifth Big 12 Menís Golfer of the Month selection in program history, joining Jeremy Alcorn (October 2004) and Baca (December 2005, February 2006). He is also the third Baylor golfer Ė menís or womenís Ė to earn Big 12 Golfer of the Month honors this season. Womenís golfers Hayley Davis (September 2011) and Jaclyn Jansen (October 2011) earned Big 12 Golfer of the Month accolades during the fall season.
Baylor has made 14 consecutive NCAA Regional appearances. The NCAA Division I Menís Golf Championship announcement will be held Mon., May 7 at 8 p.m. CDT on NCAA.org.
