View Full Version : Griner headed to Austin
No, not to play for UT. For the state tournament. She scored 22 today in their win.

Sounds like its Mansfield Summit.
If so, they're tough. They're ranked 6th and have Starr Crawford, a big girl who signed with TCU.
The other 2 teams are Pflugerville and either College Park or Fairbanks.

My Lady Panthers are coming to Austin too. didnt really expect this out of them this year. they did go 14-0 in 25-5A, but they had a pretty tough draw with some San Antonio teams there in Region IV. went down to UTSA last night to watch them, but stayed here and went to the Erwin Center for the Lady Bears game.
we've got a very good sophomore post, Nneka Enekmpali (sp?), tall quick and athletic. uncommitted so far, but the Texas coach came to see her play in the playoffs a week ago, and her coach played at Texas in the 80s. hate to her go to Texas

Giner had 22-7-7 today and was 9-17 on FG. They whipped a 31-4 team 45-26. According to the article the semi-final opponent won't be announced until tomorrow. I don't think they pre-determine matchups by region. Instead I think they try to avoid matching up the two top teams in the semis. That's amazing that 6,300 were at their game FRI night. The video on that link shows 2 sweet dunks by Griner.

Cy Fair you mean and they are tough.
Their full name is Cypress-Fairbanks. They are the original high school in the sprawling Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. None of the other Cy's have the hyphen.
I didn't even know that they were good this year. All the attention has been on Griner in the Houston area.
Tiger,
Do they have a girl that can dunk too?

Pairings for the Tournament
The UIL staff will be calling the coach on Sunday morning with pairings and tournament information. Be sure and fill out the team information form on the UIL website. The coach’s home and/or cell number from the team information form will be used to contact the coach. Pairings will not be released until 9:00 a.m. on Sunday. This information will be given to the wire services. Teams will be placed in the bracket according to their win/loss record. The two best records will be placed in opposite halves and the third best record will be placed up or down as determined by a coin flip.

Was Tisdale the last BU women's player to play in her high school's state championship game? I remember watching the high school championship game on TV and thinking she was kind of short, but feisty. Griner making it to the championship game would be a good omen.

I don't think so. Houston media would be all over her if they did.

No, I am pretty sure that Jessica Morrow played in the state 5A finals her senior year. Morrow was voted the Texas girls 5A Player of the Year in her last season at Humble.

Cy-Fair is pretty good this year. They are the defending 5A state champs. They were hurt by graduation. The Lady Bears were in on one of the players who finally signed with Stanford and played against the Lady Bears in the Ferrell Center last November. Her last name is Ogwumike. She has a younger sister who is the leader of this year's Cy-Fair team. She is a 6-3 junior center named Chiney Ogwumike. They could be tough competition for Nimitz. I couldn't find where they played Nimitz during the regular season. But they did play Dulles twice, with each team winning a game. The first game was all Dulles and Bone. The score was 80-57. Bone scored 39 points (18-22), 16 rebounds and 4 TO's. There were no individual stats entered for the Cy-Fair players. They met later on in the Katy ISD tourney. This time Cy-Fair won, 51-40. The Cy-Fair coach only posted Ogwumike's point total of 30 - nothing else. Bone had 10 points, 8 rebounds and 5 TO's. It is hard to tell how good Cy-Fair really is but I that they will be formitable. Sounds like they have a good coach.
I would love for the Lady Bears to get the younger Ogwumike. But I guess that she will follow her sister to Stanford.

Nimitz has one loss, Cy-Fair 3 losses, Pflugerville 5 losses and Summit 4 losses. This means Nimitz and Cy-Fair will play in opposite halves. Nimitz will play either Pflugervile or Summit based on the coin flip.

Update on Chiney Ogwumike - In the Region 2 final, Cy-Fair beat College Park (former top 5A team in state) 71-54 for the championship. Chiney Ogumike had 37 points, 24 rebounds, 8 blocks and 2 steals. She looks on paper like she is the real deal. And she is only a junior, 6-3 tall and she has played in 3 straight state 5A tournaments. This maybe be Griner's biggest challenge.
