View Full Version : With Danielle Wilson out for the season...

What can we hope for? I still think we should win our first round NCAA game and possibly get in the Sweet 16. That's about the best possible now. What a shame! At least she will get to come back next year and play with Griner.
Garland stop that talk...!!!
Kim's no Doctor.
Wait for the medical report.

We'll be lucky if we get past the 1st or 2nd round. To put into perspective Wilson's injury, the team is losing its best scorer, rebounder, shot blocker and provided an inside presence at the offensive and defensive ends. Our offense ain't exactly scary and without Wilson's post up plays, the team will be forced to rely more on perimeter shots and dribble penetration. Wilson's biggest impact though is at defense due to her shotblocking and intimidation. If the injury is what we think it is, then not only will it affect our play for the rest of the season but also the progress she's made this past year. By all accounts, this is her breakout year and on the verge on taking it to an all american level after this year.

From what I understand one out of eight women's basketball players tears an ACL during their college careers. When you look at how many teams lose two or three kids a year, we have been fortunate as we have dodged a lot of injuries. UT had three in one year.
If it is an ACL, the big question is how long will it take to rehab? She might well be out next year. But like Bear said, let's wait for the doc's view.
On how far we go? There are only about 25 teams in the women's game that play at the top level, so it is not all that hard to get to the round of sixteen. Doubt if this team was going much deeper than that before the injury.
Can't they do something? Inject the knee with some kind of pain reliever?
And does this mean Kim will sit down with Drew to get some 4 guard sets?

Only if you are Blake Griffin.
Shades of Jhasmin last year.
Kim made no mention of anyone hearing the "Pop".
Most ACL tears have a popping noise when it snaps.
In JP's injury she said heard the pop.

WTH reports the initial prognosis from the Baylor trainers is an ACL tear. They should know they've seen enough of them over the last several years.

Danielle going out is going to make it tough to make a deep run in the tourney. I still think we make the sweet 16. With Danielle I was thinking final four.
I don't know how far we will get in the tourney, but that was a gutsy win today in Austin. Hats off to those girls after losing Danielle in first half.

According to the game report, the players and coaches were pretty sure of the nature of the injury based on the scream.

I phrased that wrong. I meant that basketball trainers in general have seen alot of ACL's in the last several years. And I think if your a trainer you would generally know the difference between types of knee injuries.
And here's an part of the Associated Press report from the game today...
"AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—It was a scream Baylor players have heard before. It was one they hoped they would never hear again.
But they did. And when junior forward Danielle Wilson cried out and crumpled in heap under the basket, the sxith-ranked Lady Bears just knew it was going to be bad news.
“It was a tough day,” was how Baylor coach Kim Mulkey described a hard-fought 66-57 win over No. 16 Texas on Saturday.
There was really no other way to put it after watching Wilson, Baylor’s leading scorer and rebounder this season, sobbing and favoring her left leg as she was carried off the court late in the first half.
Although Wilson will be evaluated Monday, Mulkey assumed the worst, suggesting her star player is lost for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
“I’ve been around long enough to know if kids aren’t hurt, they usually get up,” Mulkey said. “I am emotional. Two years in a row now we’ve lost a key cog in our team to knee injuries.”
Sitting just a few feet away from her was Baylor senior guard Jhasmin Player, who tore the ACL in her left knee last season. She too, predicted the worst.
“We know the yell. We know the scream,” Player said. “I remember being on those same crutches. I know that same scream.”
1. Is it legal for Danielle's parents and/or coach or other significant person to be flown in to Waco right now to be with Danielle? With our nationally prominent program - which attracted a star from so far away - it is important that arrangements are made to take care of family. Baby-sittin for little brothers and sisters, and picking up parents and others to be with Danielle at this moment. She's a star who has sold many tickets for BU and will give back many times over. She is all about giving back to the community and is very valuable nationally to our Women's program. It is time for the program to be there for her, to step up, and bring them in at once.
2. What foreboding and simultaneously (strangely) hope-filled symbolism that Jhasmin would be out there having a fantatstic game and putting this team on her back and winning, and then being quoted after the W: "I was on those same crutches last year".. That is so painful to read and at the same time, re-birthing.
3. Baylor University Medical needs to make a special announcement now of extending research into the causes and cures of ACL tears in athletes with special focus on female athletes. There has to be something - an exercise routine or other action - that can taken to prevent these injuries.
I feel so bad for Wilson and this team. There is no telling how far they could have gone. Now, they can still make a run, but it will be tougher.

I'm not a compliance expert nor do I play one on TV, but I don't think so. The NCAA's rules generally don't allow for exceptional circumstances.

I really didn't expect more than a Sweet 16 visit anyway. There's just not enough offense there. They still have a good bit of talent. If they don't get punished on seeding because of the injury, they still should have a good shot at the Sweet 16 (since they'd be playing a 6 or 7 seed). OTOH, if they're facing a 5 seed, that could be a tough matchup without DW.

Well they sure didn't crumble when Dannielle went down, and pulled out a great win over UT at their house. Fantastic.

Except they were destroying UT when Wilson was in there and then the lead got down to 3 or so later on.

Shades of Jhasmin last year.
I agree. There are many parallels. Both players were emerging to their full potential on teams that were coming to their full potential. Last years team had matchless balance. This years team has depth.
VERY gritty win today in the face of this heartbreaking injury in a hostile environment against a talented top 20 team that has beaten us before and a coach who seemed to have Kim's number. Jones with 15 rebounds. Player with game high points. Morrow shuts down Raven. Tremendous leadership and maturity from these 3.
Very very proud I am of this group.
Physically no one else really provides the presence of Wilson. Yet as was shown today there is astonishing determination and effort available to provide help in other ways. If we see the same kind of effort and maturity from Medlock, Field, Allison and Z this team can still drive deep into the tournament.
This team was on the cusp of coming together for success. Both Allison and Medlock (against A&M) have had games against ranked competition where they showed that they can carry this team without big contributions from Wilson. That can happen again. If they both show that kind of play again and if Z and Field can provide strength from the bench....
This kind of adversity is why we have seniors and a great coaching staff. Big difference this year is the depth. They will develop now. And as Jhas has shown Wilson even if she has an ACL can come all the way back.

How many teams could have done what this program, our Baylor women's program, did, today?
Not the vaunted OU men's program - take out Blake Griffin and OU loses. That's to be expected! Take out whomever where-ever, and that program loses....yet, we have a steel-magnolia minded team. Very impressive win.

This is THE important thing. All the support possible within the rules should be shown to the important persons in Danielle's life. Baylor is a generous place and must show it now. If anyone on this board knows how we can help this program step up in a class way within the rules I am eager to hear it and will contribute what I can. I am reminded of how Rachel Allison's family came through after the death of Morgan Medlock's mom.

Many are overreacting. It is knee, not a death in the family. it happens to one in eight women's players. I saw it happen when I was at a game in Arkansas last week. It is a shame, but don't compare it to the Medlock situation. Huge difference. And in that case the NCAA did cut Baylor a lot of slack. In this case, as ACL tears are so common, they simply can't otherwise you would have all kinds of schools taking advantage of it.

I liked all of your post, but really agree with the above statements. Jhas improved leaps and bounds between her sophomore and junior years. Wilson did the same thing. How many of us have commented on how impressed we have been with her increased assertiveness and better moves under the basket?
And, hey, Morrow deserves props for her defense. She draws some of the hardest player assignments and does a great job at it. Didn't she get Andrea Riley in the last OSU game? She never seems to get tired, doesn't draw a heck of a lot of fouls, but is a good defensive presence even when her shooting is off (and they all have off nights from time to time.)
I am very proud of this group. They have greatly exceeded the expectations that I had for them at the beginning of the season, and those were pretty high, already. (contrary to the MBB team, for whom I also had high expectations at the beginning of the year).
And yes, Jhasmine is living proof, encouragement and motivation to Danielle if, in fact, she has torn her ACL.

This is not Varsity Blues.
The loss of Danielle is HUGE. Not only is she averaging a dbl-dbl but her presence in the lane defensively has thrown many opposing posts off their game. All year we have had problem with the 4 position and now we could possibly have Medlock and Allison on the floor at the same time. I dunno if I wouldn't put MJ as the 4. She clearly is not afraid to mix it up and battle down low for rebounds. What she lacks in size she definitely makes up in sheer determination and heart. With MJ in, you could push the tempo more and score more in transition, which we will prolly be forced to do. I look to Jhaz to remain on fire and lead this team. Just wish we had more time to work out all the kinks with the new lineup and bench players getting more minutes before the Big Dance.

That top 10 ranking had me looking at tickets to St. Louis. but I was aiming too low.
We have opportunity here for something far larger.
This is a team, a coaching staff, and a program that knows about adversity, defeat, pain, misfortune and disappointment: Jhasmine's ACL, Morgan's loss of her mother, Rachel's cousin. In both cases and no doubt others less public the University has lifted up the victim and provided the support for them to come all the way back. If our team, program, students, faculty and alumni learn how this is done we will be richer and stronger than we could be made by another final 4 appearance.
All my best to the positive posters here. We can learn a bit from Melissa Jones with her 15 rebounds off the bench:
“Out of anyone, Danielle is the most positive, most encouraging player,” Jones said. “It was just really nice to see her out there encouraging us.”
In the end, maybe, just maybe, we have learned something and become stronger from the tragedy that visited the campus now more than 5 years ago.

However, it is plumb loverly to beat Texas on the road with the added burden of your best player going down so early.

While Danielle's injury in no way compares to Medlock's loss, I still see this as a way for those who desire in the Baylor family to reach out and offer a helping hand to this family. Yes, it is just a knee injury and it does happen often in athletics today but when it happens to you it means a little more. I took my neighbor supper one night after she broke her arm. People do things for others who are hurting. Your response seems a little cold.

The summer after her junior year in high school, Candace Parker tore her ACL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anterior_cruciate_ligament) in her left knee in a summer league game. She returned in December of her senior year and went on to lead her school to its second consecutive state title.
The great Candace Parker tore her ACL and went on to win two national titles with Tennessee. Danielle can come back from this for next year.
I have a question. Did anyone see the play where Wilson was hurt? The reason I ask is that the Waco Trib had this regarding it....
"Wilson didn’t rise from the floor after landing awkwardly following a drive to the basket with 2:30 remaining in the first half. Wilson appeared to absorb a hefty bump from a Texas defender on the play, but no foul was whistled."
I am not accusing anything but wondering if anyone saw it and if it looked like they might be trying to hurt her.
