GarlandBear.......it is absolutely amazing to watch a track meet there. The BLUE track says it all. Drake University is going to spend something in the neighborhood of $16 million after the state track meet is over this next week or two and really make the track and stadium even more special. Note the area behind the Kum & Go sign immediately behind Darold is now covered with sponsor tents but come this time next year it will be an all glassed in area with corporate suites for sponsors......now that is sweet even though I prefer to sit outside to get the real feel for the meet.

Baylor's track team is loved by all at Drake and makes all Baylor Alums proud by how they carry themselves at the meet. You need to get on 35 north and come on up next year.....to watch the Green and Gold do their thing is always special.

I have some pics of Kedley I will post shortly. This story was in the Saturday edition of the Des Moines Register.

Kedley's odyssey takes big Iowa turn

By XXXXX XXXXX
REGISTER STAFF WRITER

H e wanted to quit. Heck with this, Ryan Kedley told himself. He hated the training regimen. Hated his times. Kedley used to run to find himself. Now it only got him more lost.

The low point of his freshman year at Baylor was Drake Relays week. In the spring of 2000, as a senior at North Cedar of Stanwood, Kedley ran the 400 meters in 47.04 seconds, then a state record. The next year, he wasn't fast enough to make the traveling squad the Bears took to Des Moines.

"My teammates would come back (from Drake) and say, 'So-and-so says hey,' or 'So-and-so says hello to you,' " said Kedley, shaking his shaven head. "It was a major shot to my ego."

It's healed. So has he. Kedley is a senior at Northern Iowa now. He was part of the Panthers' all-America 4 x 400 relay team that placed third at the NCAA indoors last month in Arkansas.

On Friday afternoon, he ran the second leg on the Panthers' winning 4 x 200 relay team. Northern Iowa edged North Dakota State for the Drake Relays university men's title with a time of 1:23.45.

White flags. Victory laps. Just like old times.

"We knew coming in we had the talent," Kedley said. "Taking that lap (after the race) was very special to me."

Kedley unfurled long legs into an empty row of bleacher seats and marveled at his journey. At age 18, the state's fastest quarter-miler. At 20, a disgruntled transfer. At 23, the "kind of guy you would want 10 of on your team," said Doug Case, Panthers' associate head track coach.

"I don't regret going to Baylor. That was the best choice for me, given the situation I was in (during high school)," said Kedley, who will run with the Panthers' 4 x 400 team this afternoon. "But it wasn't the right fit. Northern Iowa was. My athletic career really has come full-circle, to say the least."

It's 1,900 miles, round-trip, from Waco to Cedar Falls. Kedley says he's come twice as far.

Five years ago, he was the big fish in a small pond. Small-town hero. Teen sensation. Eight school records. Third in the country in the 400. You couldn't touch him. Unless he let you.

Kid was straight-up cocky. You would be, too, if renowned programs such as Washington and Baylor were coming to the little town of Lowden, pop. 794, scholarships in hand.

The Bears flew him down to Texas. Wined him. Dined him. Across the table sat Baylor's most celebrated track alumnus: Michael Johnson. Kedley passed the former Olympic sprinter some ketchup.

Kid was straight-up starstruck.

The honeymoon was as short-lived as the signing was quick. Kedley had been used to speed training, sprints. Baylor's longtime coach, Clyde Hart, liked his runners to develop explosion through strength work and lifting.

Kedley, a wiry sort, couldn't adjust to the bulk. He saw his :46s and :47s in the 400 creep into the :49s and low :50s.

Kid's a free thinker. Baylor is buttoned-down and Baptist.

"Being a liberal and a Catholic," he said, "I didn't spout my opinions too much."

Yet, he suddenly found himself with all kinds of time to reflect. And vent. The long-distance phone bills got larger as his track time got smaller.

"There was a lot of introspection during that time," he said. "Things got tough."

Kedley learned humility the hard way: He fell.

Kid was torn. He gave serious thoughts to hanging up the spikes. Maybe , he wondered, I'm just not good enough. At the beginning of his sophomore season, Kedley came to an agreement with the Baylor staff: If he wasn't making sufficient progress by the next spring, they would part ways. No hard feelings.

"It was a mutual thing," Kedley said. "They wanted to get the best out of me. That wasn't happening."

He has no regrets about Waco. Not even Friday, as the afternoon shadows fell on Kedley's former teammates as they stretched on the other side of the track.

"I figure I had to break myself down," Kedley said, "to build myself back up to the runner I am now."

After the 4 x 200, Kedley held a white Relays flag aloft with his left hand. A fan reached out to high-five his right.

Kid was touched.

"This," he said with a grin, "is about as close to home as you can get."

That's interesting about Kedley. I don't even remember him. I wonder if he stuck around would he have blossomed and run the fast times like he is now. Should Coach Hart tailor his training methods for different type runners instead of using the same method on all?

Coach Hart's program is perfect for quarter-milers who are more sprinters than middle-distance runners. He takes their natural abilities and makes them stronger. It's tough for kids to come in like Ryan (and Mark to some extent) who aren't blessed with 10.7/20.4 foot speed and produce soley off of strength work. Just like Colorado or Arkansas' distance programs, there will always be those who just don't fit.

Turk, these pictures bring butterflies back to my stomach......

I went two years to Drake with the team, but found out I am not a cold weather runner. Running 400 hurdles prelims at 8am in the morning wasn't good to me.

Other than the track, the stadium hasn't changed over 35 years. But the pictures sure bring back memories The track was cinder back then, red and not blue.

Picture nine shows a red brick building over the stands that is an indoor track and athletic complex where the athletes warm up. They enter through the tunnel onto the track. With shot put, discus, javelin and hammer throw all going on in the inner part of the field, they don't like for you to stay around on the inner part of the field.

Jim Ryan was the hot runner during the time, and my pictures have Ryan running against the Baylor runners.
