Both teams with 4 ranked singles players. Should be a good matchup. UCLA has 5 ranked.

I'm not familiar with Tennis strategy, but was wondering....

Florida has their lowest ranked player in the 5 spot, instead of the 4 spot. Is that because they don't think their 103 ranked player can beat our 106 ranked player, and are willing to sacrifice the 4 point to get the #5 point, thus giving them 1-1 instead of a possible 0-2?

Just curious if anyone knew.

yeah, but when Zgaga is on he is easily a top 50 player.

Our No. 2 is the defending national NCAA champion, but he's ranked lower than Dorsch.
Right now, Becker may be playing better than Dorsch. He seems to be peaking at just the right time again. I'd like to see Becker vs. Dorsch in the NCAA singles final down the road.

Baylor and Florida are getting ready to start.

Winner plays UCLA tomorrow night. Go Baylor!!

Match scheduled for six. The UCLA/Ole Miss match just ended. Will Baylor/Florida start as scheduled? (in other words, how much break between matches?)

Yes, they will start on schedule. Not much turnaround time needed. They have been warming up on the secondary set of 6 courts that sites have.

Off topic a bit, but it looks to me that all the top programs have a lot of foreign players. If true, why all the fuss in some quarters about BU having so many foreign players? Is there any top flight program that has all American players?

Like Knoll said, the ones doing the complaining (UT and A&M) are the ones who are underperforming. BTW, UT coach filed another complaint with the NCAA on BU, third time in the last three years. If you can't beat them, go cry to the NCAA.

Bears start it off right, 1-0 in the first set at #3 doubles.

But Gators take the first game on D#2. Lot's of tennis to play.

Becker & Reckeway up 3-0.

GreenAndBearIt

Dorsch & Zgaga even it up at 1 on court 1.

Gators take a game on 3, Bears still up 3-1.

Goooooo Bears!

The format is 8 game pro-set for doubles and best 2 of 3 (6 game sets) for singles, right??

Illinois, Vandy, and Stanford

After being one of the biggest complainers, Illinois no longer is all-American - in fact, two of their top three players are now foreign players.

GreenAndBearIt
05-23-05, 05:28 PM
One article said Baylor was the first to win an NCAA championship with all foreign players.

But they're Bears to me.

And Knoll isn't against Americans. All the good Americans were going to Illinois, Vandy, and Stanford when he came on board.

I think the Dark Lord of tennis has UF completely psyched out. We cleaned their clocks in doubles. I think they're intimidated big time. BU vs. UCLA will be a war.

...that was only the 2nd point given up by UF in the tournament so far

BCL79

Ok really stupid here .... what's it take to win in singles???

Jonny Blaze
05-23-05, 06:04 PM
If you win the doubles point you need 3 out of 6 matches.

If you don't win the doubles you need 4 out of 6.

caesarscott
05-23-05, 06:06 PM
Ok really stupid here .... what's it take to win in singles???not sure what you mean. games are to 6 points and have to win by two. and you have to win two out of three games at each spot to win the point. and then you have to amass four total points. since we won the doubles, we only need 3 of the 6 singles points.

collegiate team tennis may have the most complicated scoring system ever. but once you get used to it, it's easy to understand

Can anyone from U of Florida talk about football at this point? You have seen your team play the last few years, right? You know that Spurrier is long gone...right?

I thought your tennis team played well (from the stats, it appears). I am sure they will be back next year.

gatorbear

Yeah we can talk about football, we're preaseason #6 on all of the ESPN rankings. We didn't pursue Spurrier and we had 58,000 at our spring scrimmage (7,000 more than the 1994 TAMU vs. Baylor game in Waco). We have a national championship and six conference championships and we sell out every game. So yes, we can talk about football, i can tell you that I've never heard of our tennis team on campus here until today, I wasn't aware that we had one. Can Baylor talk about football?

That was great, Baylor is making great steps towards being a solid program. I've loved watching yall over the past 3 years, you can tell that Guy Morriss has a plan. I meant no disrespect.

I will not lie, I listened to 7 baylor games on the internet last year before games in the Swamp, I've fallen in love with the program and I feel like the 35-34 game was a definate turn around.

All I got annoyed with was the implication that we are envious of the men's tennis. All Florida Sports are expected to compete in the top 5 every year or not compete at all. Congrats on the win.

Not an implication. A statement.

When fans start talking about not enough "American" names of their opponents, it's because they are either xenophobic or envious. I'm guessing envious in this case. If you weren't one of them whining about the composition of the Baylor team, then the statement isn't about you.

There was no condescension in the statement. You guys went through a disaster with the Basketball Murder Scandal and you guys by all means should have collapsed under the weight of the scandal but you have stuck through. And if you are implying that Womens Basketball is a revenue sport then I wasn't aware of its implications. UF has national titles in Mens Golf, Swimming and Diving and Football. We've been to the final four in Men's basketball twice. This is all athletics, we wont compare academics.
