Man, looking at that Bruin lineup, its going to be a tough match. They have more ranked players than we do.

If our men win this one, and I fully expect them to, they with definitely earn it.

D. C. Bear

Mostly, it's good. Up on courts 1 and 3, down on court 2.

RoBennett
05-24-05, 05:35 PM
Is that a good or bad thing, Ross? Good as long as we hold serve in 1 and 3. We look to be in control of 1, up a break and serving 1st. On 3 we're up a break, but serving on even games.

Are you getting cell phone updates?

D. C. Bear
05-24-05, 05:36 PM

When you break someone's serve, it means you won a game on their serve.

"up a break" = we broken their serve one more time than they've broken ours?

RoBennett
05-24-05, 05:36 PM
We won First set on Court 1I thought they only play 1 "set" to 8 in doubles. Or do they change it for the finals?

Baylor still up a break in 2 of the matches, down a break in the other.

GreenAndBearIt

Easy now. Tap the brakes a bit. However, it is awesome that they put their foot on UCLAs' collective neck. I hope it deflated the crap out of them. It is an incredibly emotional contest, and comebacks like that can get in the other team's head.

from the perspective of a former tennis player and tennis coaches' son...a lot of the mentality of a singles' match in a team setting like this is very intriguing...i've noticed in watching baylor's matches over the past 2 years that a lot of players for both sides will be playing poorly in a particular set and will not push as much...this usually results in the loss of that set...but in the 2 of 3 format better, more in shape players (ie baylor's players) will prevail...

great example about this very mentality from kokta in today's DMN about his win to clinch the UF semifinal match yesterday

Baylor men in NCAA tennis final

02:39 AM CDT on Tuesday, May 24, 2005

By RACHEL COHEN / The Dallas Morning News

COLLEGE STATION, Texas Baylor's Michal Kokta felt confident that if he went to a third set, his conditioning would give him the edge. But extending the No. 4 singles match would have been a triumph of sorts for underdog Florida. So the Bears were relieved that Kokta won a second-set tiebreaker to clinch Baylor's semifinal victory at the NCAA Championships on Monday night at Mitchell Tennis Center.

Baylor won, 4-1, for its 57th straight victory. The top-seeded Bears will look to become only the third school to capture consecutive titles since the NCAA switched to the dual-match format in 1977.

Baylor faces UCLA tonight in a rematch of last year's final, which the Bears won, 4-0. The seventh-seeded Bruins defeated No. 3 seed Ole Miss, 4-2, in the earlier semifinal.

Baylor's match with Florida, the No. 4 seed, was closer than the final score. A third set was about to start at No. 3 singles, and the Gators led in the final set at No. 5 when Kokta closed out a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win.

The sophomore transfer, one of three Bears singles players who did not play in last year's final, admitted he was nervous on his first two match points during the tiebreaker against Nestor Briceno.

The pro-Baylor crowd was cheering and Kokta was pressing, and he failed to convert both.

But Kokta wouldn't let his third chance slip away.

Florida coach Andy Jackson hoped to push the Bears to enough third sets to sneak the upset.

But after Baylor won the doubles point, the Gators couldn't stretch the match long enough.

"If I play a third set, Florida gets a little boost and thinks, 'Hey, we can still beat these guys,' " Kokta said.

Stanford has won at least two titles in a row four times, and Southern Cal went back-to-back in 1993-94.

Jackson has such respect for the Bears' top two singles players, Benedikt Dorsch and Benjamin Becker, that he focused on ways to clinch the match without beating either senior.

Indeed, both won in straight sets.

The Gators were the more demonstrative team, throwing rackets and flinging caps, and Briceno's emotions cost him against Kokta.

Briceno was penalized a point for arguing with the official, which helped Kokta win the first set.

"It gives you the message that he's nervous, he's not really confident, he's struggling with himself," Becker said of his opponent's antics. It gives you more confidence."

one factor that plays in our favor is our conditioning in some of these longer matches...our team works out incredibly hard off the court to stay in the best shape...it's 90 in CS right now according to weatherbug...on a concrete tennis court that has been absorbing heat all day..that's easily 105 degrees...these 4-0 and 4-1 matches with early finishes for our guys is some help in this area too...we are probably comparatively well rested vs UCLA
