not a tournament for the veterans this year
First time for everything
Six players will be making their first-ever appearance in the quarterfinals of the NCAA singles draw on Thursday. Story Tweedie-Yates (TCU), Audra Cohen (Northwestern), Riza Zalameda (UCLA), Marianne Yuferova (VCU), Zuzana Zemenova (Baylor) and Jennifer Magle (Florida) are all first-timers to the final eight spots in the tourney. Only Clemson's Julie Coin and Kentucky's Aibika Kalsarieva are veterans of the quarterfinal bracket. Coin has advanced as far as the semifinals a year ago, and Kalsarieva's trip to the quarters also came in 2004.
Class System
The lower half of the singles draw will feature two senior vs. freshman matchups on Thursday. Newcomer Audra Cohen of Northwestern will face senior Story Tweedie-Yates of TCU in one match, while freshman Riza Zalameda of UCLA will play Clemson's Julie Coin play in the other lower-bracket match. On the upper half of the draw, two freshmen in VCU's Marianna Yuferova and Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor will play for a trip to the semifinals. Senior Aibika Kalsarieva of Kentucky will play junior Jennifer Magley of Florida in the fourth quarterfinal match.

Twice as nice
TCU's Story Tweedie-Yates, Florida's Jennifer Magley, VCU's Marianna Yuferova, Northwestern's Audra Cohen and UCLA's Riza Zalameda are still alive in both the singles and doubles draw. Only two times in NCAA history has one person won the singles championship as well as the doubles title in the same year: Linda Gates of Stanford in 1985 and Keri Phebus of UCLA in 1995.
