The year sucked. But the Baylor-Texas game was lovely.
How do you remember that year?
It would seem that the chemicals would have made it a blur.

I was in college so I was pretty drunk through most of that year.

I can't remember where I left my sunglasses this afternoon, but I remember what movie my wife and I saw on our first date in 1972. And I remember the Baylor-Texas game of 1970.
Texas came to Waco undefeated, loaded with All-Americans, and ranked #1. Baylor was in the second year of the Bill Beall era, and we were horrible. Baylor ended the season 2-9. Texas won the national championship (in one poll).
Anyway, we were totally outmanned. Everybody expected a 50 point slaughter.
But the game was a dogfight from start to finish. We gave Texas all they could handle, and then some, before finally losing 21-14. I think it was Texas' lowest margin of victory in conference play.
It was one of the most exciting games I've ever been to. We lost, but with a horrible team we came close to upsetting the best team in the country.

Bear Man, VareBear and I were in school then..............things were so bad that Vare started me smoking while he was playing for Beall. We started smoking with all the other players............Talking about being outmaned.......it drove us all to drinking and smoking and some of the guys to stealing 8 tracks and batteries from the parking lot ..... in Martin no less.........what a great time of our lives.................hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hah..............

Baylor Trainer & Texas-X John Barnett was recognized with a Fighting Bear Award for his pep-talk to the team.

Good game. Texas won. Stayed Number 1 in the polls.

I remember that game very well. Lanny Cook was quartebacking and we had two Derek Davis touchdowns called back on penalty (sound familiar). Student body chanted "GO GO GO BEARS GO" for the entire 3rd quarter. Softly when the Bears had the ball and loudly when the cows had the ball. Best game experiance I have ever been a part of. In my mind we won the game. Royal was going into appoplexy on the sideline. Just one more in a long line of hose jobs by the zebras.

Yeah, the SWC had to have somebody in the cellar, and they wanted it to be Baylor and they wanted Texas to win the national championship. :headache:

The Beatles breaking up ruined 1970 for me.
I was there in the student section. That was truly the beginning of the end for the wishbone. We were first team that ran a defense with a shadow defender on the trailing pitch halfback for the entire game. After that game other teams went back to the BU defense for clues on how to stop the wishbone. The wishbone did continue for many years, but that was the defense that eventually did it in. If BU could control it with totally inferior talent, then it was doomed. That was the only positive notable thing that Bill Beall ever did football-wise for BU.

1972 was also well played by the Bears. Didn't UT score two td's in the 4th quarter to win 17-3 or something like that. Roosevelt Leaks chewed us up as I recall.

LubBear, I remember us being deep in UT territory, and QB Laney Cook was on his way to the EZ on an option or bootleg. Our field was about 50% brown grass, and 50% brown dirt. Cook hit a stretch of dirt and lost his footing, with nothing but brown paydirt in front of him. Remember how horrible our grass field used to look by mid-season?

Fred: I had forgotten about the "Go, Go, Go Bears Go" chant. It was accompanied by a thrusting arm motion. I don't think anybody planned the thrusting arm motion; it just spontaneously happened and caught on. After the game a friend remarked that her arm was exhausted.
Swamp: Excellent point about the beginning of the end for the Wishbone.

Bear Man it was spontaneous. There was something almost mystical about it. I also remember Randy Cooper running really well that day and with the cows big star being wooster we all chanted Cooooo like they did Woooo. Our guys really played above their heads that day and deserved the win.
in 98 we went to Austin
some old dude in a BU hat was very ripped by the mid of the 4th qtr when it looked like we might win
he kept yellin 1974 every 2 seconds
I remember 1974 for some reason
